The Chisti Tradition through the Eyes of Khaliq Ahmad Nizami: A Thematic Study of Tarikh-i-Mashayikh-i-Chist

Tarīkh-i-Mashāyikh-i-Chisht, authored by Khaliq Ahmad Nizami, stands as a seminal contribution to the study of Indian Sufism, particularly the Chishti tradition. This paper offers a thematic study of the text, exploring how Nizami, as a historian of Indo-Islamic society, interprets the spiritual, social, and political dimensions of the Chishti silsila. Departing from hagiographical romanticism, Nizami employs a nuanced historical method that foregrounds the lived experiences of Sufi saints, their engagement with society, and their complex relationship with political authority.
