This thesis explores sustainable downtown waterfront development planning and Design with a specific focus on HoanKiem Lake, a central and symbolic urban space in Hanoi, Vietnam. In the context of rapid urbanization and environmental challenges, the study highlights the urgent need to reimagine the role of urban waterfronts in enhancing livability, preserving cultural heritage, and improving ecological balance. Hoan Kiem Lake, as one of the few green spaces in the dense urban core, holds significant historical, social, and environmental value, serving as both a tourist hub and a civic gathering place. The research adopts a qualitative methodology combining literature review, case study analysis, spatial observation, and comparative reference to international best practices. The study examines current urban pressures affecting the lake area, such as over-commercialization, environmental degradation, and loss of public accessibility. It aims to propose strategic planning approaches that promote sustainable use, cultural continuity, and inclusive public space design. By positioning Hoan Kiem Lake as a model for sustainable waterfront revitalization, this thesis contributes to ongoing urban discourse in Vietnam and offers practical insights for policy-makers, urban planners, and community stakeholders seeking to enhance the living environment of Hanoi's historical center.
