A Study on the Characteristics of Architectural Space and Form from the Perspective of Phenomena and Perception : Focusing on the Architectural Works of Steven Holl

This study examines the methods and characteristics by which Steven Holl’s design, though regressive, remains faithful to the exploration of architectural essence such as architectural thinking, spatial perception, and the integration of materiality and sensibility, as explored and meticulously realized throughout the design process. Holl’s design characteristics can be summarized in two main aspects: phenomenological perspective and materiality/materials. metaphors and citations, urbanity and context, and parallax and perspective(chiasm). Additionally, he introduced the concept of hinged space. a case study analyzing 30 examples using 13 categorized design elements—metaphor/citation, urbanity/context, parallax/perspective, hinge space, weaving, light, time-space, materiality/materials, contrast, inversion, entanglement, harmony/connection, and transformation/unpredictability—reveals that the phenomenological elements of light, time-space, and materiality/materials had the highest application rates. Metaphor/citation, which emphasizes design concept, showed a medium level of application. This study examines various elements and methods associated with the experimental exploration of design that realizes essence and integration, materiality and concept, and phenomenological characteristics and spatial perception.
