Exploring Professional Ethics of Interpreters in the AI Era

This study aims to propose a set of professional ethical guidelines for interpreters that can serve as a reference in the rapidly evolving age of artificial intelligence (AI). To establish a theoretical foundation, the paper examines prior research and existing literature on general AI ethics, interpreter ethics discussed within the field of translation and interpreting studies, and codes of ethics promulgated by professional associations. Building on an analysis of potential ethical issues interpreters may face in the AI era, the study offers practical professional ethics tailored to contemporary interpreting practice. Specifically, the proposed framework focuses on the values highlighted in traditional codes of interpreter ethics—namely, confidentiality and data security, quality assurance and accountability, professional competence, and impartiality. The paper further explores how these core ethical principles are challenged by new threats and dilemmas in the AI era and suggests concrete strategies and directions for interpreters to address such ethical concerns.
