A Review of Corporate Language Policies and the Role of T&I

This study aims to review corporate language policies and the role of T&I, and suggest avenues for the future development of corporate language policies in Korea. To this end, this study performed an integrative review of the literature on corporate language policies. It examined policies on lingua franca, language training, functional multilingualism, language node, and T&I. The study goes further, discussing the gap between formal policies and the discretionary practices on the frontlines, as well as the side effects, such as inefficiency in business communication and imbalance in power structure and information access. The study highlights the lack of attention to T&I in the corporate language policy discourse, and underscores the importance of providing professional T&I service to ensure effective communication. The study concludes by recommending the adoption of a nuanced, multilayered policy that reflects field realities, and underlines the importance of mainstreaming T&I in both language policies and interdisciplinary scholarly discourse.
