루카 7,36-50의 소제목 ‘죄 많은 여자를 용서하시다’에 대한 문제 제기

Challenging the Subtitle “Forgiving a Sinful Woman” in Luke 7:36-50

본고는 루카 7,36-50의 소제목 ‘죄 많은 여자를 용서하시다’의 타당성에 대한 문제를제기한다. 왜냐하면, 이 소제목은 본문의 내용을, 마치 죄인인 여인이 보여준 행동들 때문에 예수께서 여인의 죄를 용서하신다는 의미로 해석하게 만들기 때문이다. 여인의 행동을 이해하기 위해서 가장 중요한 기준은 그에 관하여 예수가 말씀하신 ‘두채무자의 비유’(루카 7,41-42)이다. ‘빚을 탕감받은 후 채권자에게 사랑을 표현한다’는 비유의 내용에 근거하여 여인의 행동을 바라보면, 여인은 이미 죄가 용서된 상태로 예수에게 와서 그에 대한 사랑을 표현한 것이다. 또한 예수가 여인에게 ‘죄를 용서받았다’고 말씀하신 것은, 그녀가 다른 이들에게 여전히 죄인으로 여겨지고 있었기 때문에 그녀가 더이상 죄인이 아님을 공적으로 선포하시는 것으로 해석되어야 한다. 따라서 ‘죄 많은 여자를 용서하시다’라는 성경의 소제목은, ‘죄인이었던 여인이 예수에게 나아와 죄를 용서받은 것에 대해 감사하며 사랑을 표현한다’는 의미를 드러내는 제목으로 수정되어야 할 필요가 있어 보인다.

This study raises questions about the appropriateness of the subtitle “Forgiving a Sinful Woman” in Luke 7:36-50. The subtitle could lead to an interpretation that Jesus forgave the woman's sins because of her actions, as described in the passage. The key to understanding the woman's actions lies in Jesus' parable of the two debtors (Luke 7:41-42). According to the parable, the debtors express love to the creditor after their debts have been forgiven. In light of this, the woman's actions should be viewed as an expression of love toward Jesus because she had already been forgiven. Additionally, Jesus' declaration to the woman that her sins had been forgiven can be understood as a public proclamation, addressing her ongoing perception by others as a sinner and affirming that she was no longer bound by her past. Therefore, the subtitle “Forgiving a Sinful Woman” in the revised New Korean Bible should be reconsidered and replaced with a title that reflects the meaning of the passage: ‘a woman who was a sinner expresses gratitude and love to Jesus for forgiveness’.
