본 논문은 복합 생태 위기의 시대에 식별(discernment)이 신학적 응답의 핵심적 방법임을 전제로, 교황 프란치스코의 사도적 권고『하느님을 찬미하여라』(Laudate Deum)에 내재된 식별 구조를 분석한다. 복합 현실을 관찰(see)하고 복음적 관점에서 성찰(judge)하며그리스도인의 실천(act)으로 응답하는 3단계 식별 틀은 가톨릭 사회교리의 본질적 구조이며,『하느님을 찬미하여라』도 예외가 아니다. 비록 이 문헌이 ‘식별’이라는 용어를 명시적으로 사용하지 않지만, 사회교리 전통의 틀로 이해할 때 그 안에 내재된 식별 과정을감지할 수 있다. 본 논문은『하느님을 찬미하여라』가 기후 위기라는 복합적 현실 안에서 정치·경제 구조의 윤리적 책임을 성찰하고 행동으로 응답할 것을 촉구한다는 점에서 식별 행위로 해석될 수 있음을 주장한다. 아울러 이러한 식별 구조를 분석함으로써 프란치스코 교황이제시하는 생태적 응답이 사회정치적 회심과 연결되는 통합적 식별임을 밝힌다. 나아가『찬미받으소서』(Laudato Si')에서 제시된 통전적(integral) 회심 구조와 조응하는 식별의신학적 차원을 ‘생태적 식별’(ecological discernment)이라는 개념으로 제안하고, 이를 통합 생태론의 회심 구조를 실현하기 위한 신학적 틀로 발전시키기 위한 가능성과 전망을모색하고자 한다.

This study advances a theological reading of Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum by elucidating its latent structure of discernment, deemed indispensable for informed ecclesial engagement amid contemporary ecological complexity. Grounded in the tripartite itinerary of Catholic social teaching—namely, the attentive “seeing” of socio-environmental realities; the Gospel-informed “judging” of their ethical dimensions; and the consequential “acting” in Christian praxis—this paper demonstrates that Laudate Deum, although refraining from explicit reference to “discernment,” nevertheless enacts this hermeneutic framework. Attesting to the exhortation’s exigency, the analysis reveals how it summons the faith community to undertake rigorous ethical reflection upon, and decisive intervention within, prevailing political and economic structures shaped by the multifaceted climate crisis. Building upon this structural exegesis, the paper contends that Pope Francis’s ecological mandate exemplifies an integrative form of discernment, one that seamlessly converges with the dynamics of sociopolitical conversion. In dialogue with the schema of integral conversion articulated in Laudato Si’, it further proposes the concept of “ecological discernment” as a heuristic for situating this convocatory process within a broader theological-ecological paradigm. The conclusion appraises the prospective contours of such a framework, outlining its promise for fostering a conversion-oriented integral ecology that coheres spiritual, ethical, and socio-political renewal.
