Philosophical foundations of Pilgrimage Spirituality

본 논문은 프란치스코 교황의 2025년 희년 칙서를 요약하고 사이론적 관점에서 성찰한 후, 특정 종교문화를 초월한 순례 영성의 차원에서 철학적 기초를 탐구한다. 연구는윌리엄 데스먼드의 ‘사이론적 형이상학’을 중심으로, 인간 존재를 ‘되어감’의 과정으로 해석하며, 순례를 자기화와 타자화의 역동적 여정으로 규정한다. 순례자는 내적 성찰(자애적 자기화)과 타자와의 상호작용(타애적 자기화)을 통해 공동체적 변화와 영적 성숙을 경험한다. 논문은 희망의 영성을 신학적 덕목을 넘어 존재론적·관계적·실천적 역동성으로확장하여, 현대 사회의 허무주의·전체주의·악의 문제를 타애적 봉사와 열린 공동체, 기원적 선의 관점에서 재해석한다. 끝으로, 순례 영성은 특정 종교의 내적 현상을 넘어 모든인간 존재와 우주적 변화의 과정에 내재된 보편적 인간학적 기반임을 제시한다.

This paper summarizes Pope Francis’s 2025 Jubilee bull and reflects on it from a metaxological perspective, before exploring the philosophical foundations of pilgrimage spirituality beyond the confines of any particular religious culture. Centered on William Desmond’s “metaxological metaphysics,” the study interprets human existence as a process of becoming, and defines pilgrimage as a dynamic journey of self-becoming and other-becoming. The pilgrim experiences communal transformation and spiritual maturity through inner reflection (erotic selving) and interaction with others (agapeic selving). The paper extends the spirituality of hope beyond a theological virtue to an ontological, relational, and practical dynamism, reinterpreting the contemporary challenges of nihilism, totalitarianism, and evil in terms of agapeic service, open community, and original goods. Ultimately, the study argues that pilgrimage spirituality constitutes a universal anthropological foundation inherent not only to the internal phenomena of particular religions, but to the process of becoming of all human existence and cosmic transformation.
