Despite the passage of time, many people still remember him, remain deeply moved by his life, and strive to carry on the mission he left behind. Why, then, does Father Lee remain so unforgettable? Through his story, people experience a kind of catharsis as they vicariously encounter the emptiness of worldly success and the profound fulfillment that comes from authentic happiness. Korean society observed—largely through the media—how Lee Tae-seok, once a successful physician and one of the so-called ‘ultimate winners’ in Korean society, gave up everything to become a Catholic religious, priest, and missionary. He dedicated his life to serving in Sudan, one of the poorest countries in the world. In witnessing this, people were confronted with the reality of their own lives—trapped in a relentless cycle of competition that often prevents true happiness— and contrasted it with the life of someone who had broken free from that cycle and embodied genuine joy. In this contrast, they discovered not only a reflection of their own struggles but also a living example of an alternative path. As such, Father Lee came to be regarded as a hero—someone who revealed the essence of the happiness they truly longed for. This recognition is one of the key reasons he continues to be remembered so vividly. The ‘Lee Tae-seok phenomenon’ prompts reflection on the Korean Catholic Church itself. Is the Church in Korea effectively bearing witness to and proclaiming the true happiness that Jesus taught?
