A Study on the Types of New Materialist Philosophy and Its Theological Feasibility

이 논문은 신유물론 철학의 신학적 수용 가능성을 탐구하기 위해, 신유물론의 세 가지주요 흐름 -생기론적 신유물론, 객체지향 존재론, 수행적 유물론- 을 구분하여 소개하고, 이에 대한 철학 내부의 비판을 검토한다. 나아가 인간과 물질(더 나아가 객체와 로봇)의‘존재론적 동일시’를 주장하는 신유물론의 결론에 대하여, 하느님의 형상으로서 인간이지니는 ‘가치론적 차이’ 개념을 통해 비판적 수용 가능성을 제시한다. 특히 물질(객체, 로봇)의 초월성과 영원성 개념 대신, 인간 존재의 피조성과 역사적 유한성을 강조하며, 묵시-종말론적 그리스도 사건에 기초한 역사와 시간 이해를 통해 인간을 해석한다. 이러한관점에서 신유물론을 일정 부분 신학적으로 수용하되, 그 한계를 비판적으로 넘어서는새로운 신학적 패러다임을 모색하고자 한다.

This paper explores the theological feasibility of incorporating New Materialist philosophy by identifying and analyzing its three main strands—vitalist new materialism, object-oriented ontology, and performative materialism—and engaging with philosophical critiques from within the tradition. It critically responds to the New Materialist conclusion of “ontological identification” between humans and matter (including objects and robots) by proposing the “axiological distinction” grounded in the theological notion of the imago Dei. While New Materialism challenges anthropocentric ontologies and affirms the agency of matter, this study contends that theological anthropology must preserve the unique value and vocation of human beings as covenantal and moral agents. Instead of attributing transcendence and eternity to matter, the paper emphasizes human creatureliness and finitude, interpreting humanity through the lens of the apocalyptic-eschatological event of Christ. On this basis, it situates the human vocation within the historical and temporal dimensions of God’s redemptive work. In doing so, the paper argues for a theological appropriation of New Materialism that engages its insights and transcends its limitations, contributing to a constructive theological paradigm for contemporary engagement between theology and posthumanist philosophy.
