Objective: This study examines the relationship between family-of-origin experiences and child anxiety, mediated by marital conflict. Methods: The research involved 302 fathers and mothers of elementary school children in grades 3 and 4 (aged 10-11 years), assessing their family-of-origin intimacy, two types of marital conflict—constructive marital conflict (positive) and destructive marital conflict (negative)— and the levels of anxiety in their children. Results: The results of structural equation modeling indicated that higher level of intimate experience within the family of origin was linked to lower levels of destructive marital conflict, which, in turn, correlated with lower levels of child anxiety. However, constructive marital conflict did not serve as a significant mediator between intimate family-of-origin experience and child anxiety. Conclusions: These findings highlight the critical role of destructive marital conflict and family-of-origin experiences on child anxiety. By addressing parental family-of-origin backgrounds alongside marital conflict issues, this study provides foundational evidence for practical applications in education and counseling. This can inform interventions and support strategies aimed at mitigating child anxiety by focusing on both family-of-origin influences and marital dynamics.
