Objective: The purpose of this study was to comprehensively analyze the structural relationship among variables related to young children’s overdependence on smart media. Specifically, this study investigated the individual and multiple mediating effects of media intervention and media emotion regulation in the effect of parents’ media literacy on young children’ smart media dependence. Methods: A total of 235 parents of young children participated in this study. The collected data from survey were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and PROCESS Macro v.4.2. Results: As a result of this study, it was found that parents’ media literacy had an effect on media mediation and media emotion regulation, and indirectly affected children’s smart-media dependence through media emotion regulation. In particular, as a result of analyzing the mediating effects of media intervention and media emotion regulation together, only media emotion regulation showed a unique mediating effect. Conclusions: The present study suggests that parental media literacy influences young children’s overdependence on smart media, and that this influence occurs through parent’s media emotion regulation rather than media mediation.
