Systemic Disease-Related Factors Contributing to Unfulfilled Dental Care Needs: Analysis of the 8-9th (2019-2023) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Objectives: To investigate factors affecting contributing to unmet dental care needs among Koreans aged over 20 years, with a focus on systemic disease. Methods: Data for this study was obtained from the 8-9th (2019-2023) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The final analysis included 16,015 participants who took part in the health examination survey and oral check-ups. Statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS version 21.0, specifically accounting for a complex sampling design. A chi-square test was used to verify any differences in the distribution of independent variables associated with unmet dental care needs. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors influencing unmet dental care needs. Results: To analyze the factors influencing the unmet dental care needs, general characteristics, health-related behaviors, and systemic disease conditions were considered. The results indicated that the unmet dental care needs were more prevalent among socially vulnerable groups, particularly those with systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Conclusions: This study’s findings suggest that the unmet dental care needs have multifactorial causes. This study, based on the 8th and 9th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2023), identified key factors associated with unmet dental care needs. Higher rates were observed among older adults, women, individuals with lower socioeconomic status, and those with systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. These findings highlight recent patterns of dental care utilization in Korea and underscore the need for future research on temporal trends and policy impacts.
