The Effects of Dental Hygiene Students’ Academic Failure Tolerance, Social Support, Academic Self-efficacy

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationships among academic failure tolerance, social support, and academic self-efficacy in dental hygiene students experiencing stress from national examinations and clinical practice. Methods: The data were collected from 172 students through a self-administered survey conducted from June 5 to 27, 2025. The questionnaire included five general characteristics, 12 social support items, 18 academic failure tolerance items, and 26 academic self-efficacy items. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 with t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple regression. Results: Academic self-efficacy was positively correlated with academic failure tolerance (r = 0.557). Significant predictors of academic selfefficacy were a moderate level of major satisfaction (p = 0.016) and academic failure tolerance (p < 0.001), explaining 32.6% of the variance. Conclusions: For dental hygiene students with clinical practice experience, academic self-efficacy was significantly associated with major satisfaction and academic failure tolerance. These findings provide basic data to inform strategies for enhancing academic self-efficacy.
