Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of academic helplessness and depression on major commitment and major satisfaction among dental hygiene students, and to examine whether major commitment mediates these relationships. Methods: A total of 297 students from dental hygiene departments in Daegu and Ulsan participated in this cross-sectional study using a structured self-report questionnaire. Results: Academic helplessness and depression were significantly negatively correlated with both major commitment and major satisfaction (p<0.01). Major commitment showed a strong positive correlation with major satisfaction (r=0.757, p<0.01). Hierarchical regression analysis confirmed that major commitment partially mediated the effect of academic helplessness and depression on major satisfaction. Sobel test results were significant (Z=9.221, Z=7.511, p<0.05), confirming the mediating role of major commitment. Conclusions: The findings suggest that academic helplessness and depression negatively influence students’ engagement and satisfaction with their major, with major commitment playing a critical mediating role. To enhance educational outcomes, early detection and intervention programs addressing psychological difficulties such as helplessness and depression are necessary, along with strategies that strengthen academic motivation and engagement.
