Analysis of Domestic Research Trends on Digital-based Learning Media in Dental Hygiene Department: A Scoping Review

Objectives: This scoping review mapped research trends in digital learning media used in Korean dental hygiene programs over the past decade. It also proposes recommended outcome measures and usage guidelines for future study design. Methods: We searched domestic databases and initially retrieved 226 records using the keywords “dental hygiene/tooth AND digital education/ 3D/VR/AR”. Records were organized in Microsoft Excel. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 studies were included. We analyzed general characteristics, types of digital media, intervention methods and duration, and outcome indicators. Results: From 2018 to 2023, one study was published each year; publications increased in 2024. Six studies (50.0%) reported IRB approval. Eight studies (66.7%) reported G*Power-based sample size estimation. VR was the most frequently used tool in six studies (50.0%), followed by AR in three (25.0%), 3D simulations in two (16.7%), and a camera-overlay application in one (8.3%). Most studies used experimental-control designs (66.7%). Intervention periods were generally short. Affective variables—learning satisfaction, flow, and interest—were the most common outcomes. Conclusions: Research on digital learning media in Korean dental hygiene education is growing but remains limited. Ethical review procedures and standardized sample size estimation should be strengthened. Future studies should employ longer interventions, objective performance measures, and large-scale longitudinal designs to capture sustained educational impact. Despite the modest evidence base, this review offers foundational guidance for selecting measurement tools and designing effective, ethically sound digital education studies in dental hygiene.
