The Mediating Effect of Health Literacy on the Relation Between Oral Health-Related Indicators and Health-Related Quality of Life: The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2023)

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of health literacy on the relation between oral health-related indicators and health-related quality of life, focusing on Korean adults. Methods: Using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2023), 5,686 people were selected. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to confirm the mediating effect of health information literacy. Results: Self-perceived oral health status and problems with chewing and speaking were found to influence health-related quality of life through the input of health information literacy, a mediating variable (p <.001). Conclusions: Oral health status influences health-related quality of life, and this relation is partially mediated by health literacy. Therefore, improving health literacy may help alleviate the decline in quality of life caused by oral health problems.
