Psychological intervention is an essential component in addiction treatment, especially in regulating emotions and behavior, as well as restoring self-awareness. Recently, compassion-based interventions have gained attention as a means of addressing the core psychological distress experienced by individuals with addiction, including chronic shame and self-blame, feelings of loss resulting from addiction, and self-punishing thoughts and avoidance behaviors following relapse. This paper aims to comprehensively examine the theoretical foundations, psychological mechanisms, empirical evidence, and clinical implications of compassion-based approaches in recovery. Following an overview of the development of compassion-based approaches in the field of mental health, this paper explores the psychological mechanisms and empirical findings related to compassion, including self-compassion, in the context of addiction recovery. The paper concludes by outlining clinical strategies and practical considerations for applying compassion-based approaches with individuals struggling with addiction, highlighting their potential contributions to integrated treatment and clinical work.
