This study aims to analyze a practical case of applying Generative AI in Japanese language education at the university level, specifically focusing on kanji vocabulary learning, and to compare its educational effects with traditional lecture-based instruction. The participants were 28 undergraduate students enrolled in a course titled “Practical Kanji and Vocabulary.” Over a 15-week semester, both lecture-based and AI-integrated classes were implemented. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post- surveys, and qualitative insights were derived from learners’ reflective journals. The results indicated that while the lecture-based class received higher satisfaction in terms of content and instructional delivery, the AI- based class—particularly using ChatGPT—fostered greater learner autonomy, practical language use, and motivation. Interactive learning with generative AI was found to be effective in enhancing self-directed learning and creative expression. This study highlights the pedagogical potential of AI-integrated instruction and provides practical implications for Japanese kanji education, offering foundational insights for future innovations in foreign language teaching and curriculum design.
