This study investigates how the use of ChatGPT for revision in English writing classes affects the development of writing skills of ten primary pre-service teachers in the areas of content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics of their writings, as well as their affective domains. To this end, qualitative data were analyzed from the first drafts written by participants during a process-oriented writing phase, and the final drafts revised after they received feedback from ChatGPT as well as their reflective journals. The results show that ChatGPT feedback significantly improved the content and the organization of primary pre-service teachers’ essays by encouraging them to add more details and examples, and to structure their ideas in a more logical and coherent manner. The findings also indicate that using ChatGPT as a revision tool helped them to select more appropriate vocabulary, correct grammatical errors for clarity, and use writing mechanics, such as spelling and punctuation, more accurately. Furthermore, with the support of ChatGPT, primary pre-service teachers reported increased interest in writing activities, greater confidence in sentence construction, enhanced motivation for essay writing, and more cautious and reflective attitudes towards using ChatGPT as a writing assistant.
