The effects of AI app-based English vocabulary learning on university students’ vocabulary acquisition and learner perception

This study examines the effects of using QuillBot, an AI-based learning tool, on English vocabulary acquisition among Korean university students. It also investigates learners’ perceptions toward AI app-based English vocabulary learning in order to establish an effective vocabulary learning method and teaching plan for self-directed learning. Quantitative data from pre- and post-vocabulary tests, five vocabulary quizzes, and pre- and post-surveys of 45 students taking a Basic TOEIC class as part of the liberal arts curriculum at D University in Chungcheongnam-do were analyzed. A qualitative analysis was also conducted on open-ended survey responses and learners’ experiences and opinions recorded in learning journals. The findings are as follows. First, learners using the AI tool showed statistically significant improvements in all quantitative vocabulary tests and quizzes. Second, positive responses were recorded regarding learner awareness and the effectiveness and satisfaction of using AI tools in vocabulary learning. Third, participating students frequently mentioned vocabulary learning support, learning efficiency, and self-directed learning as advantages. As in previous studies, the disadvantages included meaning distortion, limited free features, and a lack of detailed feedback due to limitations in the functionality, usability, and accessibility of the AI tool. Based on the findings, several educational suggestions are discussed.
