청남 오제봉의 ‘서예 관련 연구’에 대한 고찰

A Study on Cheongnam Oh Je-bong’s Research on Calligraphy

본 연구는 부산에서 서예가로 활동했던 청남 오제봉의 ‘서예 관련 연구’에 관한 고찰이다. 그는 15세에 출가하여 승직에 몸담았던 환속한 서예가로 漢學과 佛學 등에 학식이 高邁한 서예가였다. 1978년 부산지역을 중심으로 발간된 종합예술동인지 『갈숲』(제1號)에 기고한 「한국의 名筆들」에는, 先人들의 金石文과 글씨 搨本을 모아 개론적인 한국서예사를 정리하고 간략한 비평까지 실어놓았다. 그는 書藝史와 秋史書法에 대한 연구와 비평, 추사의 書評에 관한 비평을 하며 서예의 건전한 비평문화를 유도하였다. 또 1989년 『갈숲』(제27號)에 기고한 「秋史先生雅號集을 내면서」라는 글에는, 자신이 팔십 평생에 추사 선생을 흠모하여 작품에 쓰인 異種 雅號를 수집한 결과물을 실어놓았다. 청남은 추사 김정희의 아호 283首를 수집하여 선행 연구된 아호 220首를 합하여 503首를 발표하였다. 여기에 필자가 수집한 12수의 아호도 함께 제시한다. 이처럼 한국서예사에 중요한 기록물이 될 청남 오제봉의 ‘서예 관련 연구’에 대하여 그 의의와 업적을 기리고 평가하며, 아울러 그의 연구물이 遺失되지 않도록 기록으로 남기고자 한다.

This study examines the scholarship on Korean calligraphy by Cheongnam Oh Je-bong, a Busan-based calligrapher who entered monastic life at the age of fifteen and later returned to the secular world. Drawing on deep learning in classical Chinese and Buddhist philosophy, he established himself as a noble calligrapher in Busan. In 1978, he contributed “Renowned Calligraphers of Korea” to the inaugural issue of the comprehensive arts journal Galsup, where he compiled epigraphic inscriptions and rubbings of earlier masters, organized them into an introductory history of Korean calligraphy, and offered succinct critical evaluations. Through these writings, he helped cultivate a constructive culture of calligraphic criticism, engaging in research on the history of calligraphy, on the works of Chusa Kim Jeong-hee, and on critical discourse surrounding Chusa studies. In 1989, in the 27th issue of Galsup, he published “On the Collection of Chusa’s Literary Pseudonyms,” presenting the fruits of his lifelong engagement with Chusa. There, he catalogued 283 pseudonyms used by Chusa and combined them with 220 previously documented names, publishing a total of 503 entries. Building on this foundation, the present study identifies 12 additional pseudonyms, bringing the cumulative total to 515. By reassessing the significance of Cheongnam Oh Je-bong’s contributions to Korean calligraphy studies, this article honors his achievements and preserves his scholarship as a valuable record for future research.
