대학생의 군 복무 이후 제적 시점별 특성

Differences in Student Characteristics by Withdrawal Timing Following Military Service

군 복무는 다양한 측면에서 개인의 관점을 재구성하는 계기가 되며, 이는 학업 지속 여부에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 군 복무 이후 제적한 학생을 대상으로제적 시점에 따라 분류 및 분석하여 정책적 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 지역소재 4년제 대학생을 대상으로 군복무 후 재학 한 학생과 제적한 학생을 구분하고 제적한학생은 다시 제적 시점을 기준으로 ‘제대 직후 제적 집단’과 ‘제대복학 후 추가 휴학을 거친 제적 집단’으로 구분하고 특성을 비교하였다. 연구 결과, ‘제대 직후 제적’ 집단은 대학 소재지와 고교 소재지 간 불일치 비율, 정시 전형 입학 비율 등이 높게 나타났으며 비교과 프로그램 참여율이 낮게 나타났다. 반면, ‘제대복학 후 추가 휴학을 거친 제적 집단’의 경우, 평균 학점이 낮고 누적 휴학 횟수가 많은 것으로 나타났으며, 비교과 프로그램참여율이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과에 따라 군 복무 의무 하에 있는 대학 재학생에 대해 입대휴학 신청 시, 군 복무 중, 제대복학 직후, 제대복학생의 추가 휴학 신청 시등 시점에 따른 지원 방안을 제안하였다. 더불어 연구의 한계점에 기반한 후속연구를 제안하였다.

Military service often serves as a critical turning point that reshapesstudents’ perspectives and may influence their academic persistence. This studyaims to derive policy implications by analyzing students who were dismissed fromuniversity after completing military service, classified according to the timing of dismissal. Using data from a regional four-year university, students were firstdivided into those who continued enrollment after service and those who droppedout. Among the dropouts, two groups were identified: students dismissedimmediately after discharge and those dismissed after taking additional leaves ofabsence following re-enrollment. The findings indicate that the “immediatedismissal” group showed higher proportions of students whose high school anduniversity locations did not match, higher admission through the regular screeningtrack, and lower participation in extracurricular programs. In contrast, the“post-return dismissal” group was characterized by lower grade point averages,more accumulated leaves of absence, and similarly lower extracurricularparticipation. Based on these results, this study proposes differentiated supportstrategies tailored to students subject to compulsory military service
