The Educational Thought of Henry Gerhard Appenzeller

헨리 게하르트 아펜젤러는 고종황제의 공식적인 교육과 의료 선교사에 대한 요청으로 스크랜턴 의료 선교사와 함께 북감리교의 선교사로 피택되어 한국으로 입국하게 된다. 입국 후 그는 배재학당과 정동교회를 설립하여 교육사업을 하게 되면서 한국 근대교육의 중추적인 인물이 된다. 이 논문은 한국 근대교육을 이끈 아펜젤러의 교육철학 사상이 무엇이었는지를 알아보려는 목적을 가진다. 이것을 규명하기 위하여 먼저 아펜젤러가미국에서 어떠한 환경에서 성장하였는지 살펴보게 된다. 또한 신앙적으로 누구에게 영향을 받았고, 어떤 교육적인 환경을 통하여 그의 교육사상이 형성 되었는지를 살펴본다. 한국 근대교육의 모델이 되었던 프랭클린앤 마샬 대학을 포함하여 그가 영향을 받았고 교육받았던 학교와 중요한 선생님들이 누구였는지 알아본다. 또한 미국에서 이러한 영향을 통해 아펜젤러가 한국에서 어떠한 교육철학을 가지고 활동했는지를 조명해 본다. 이 논문을통하여, 아펜젤러가 한국에서 근대교육을 진행하면서 자신만의 철학을 가지고 어떠한 교육사상을 품고 있었는지를 조금이나마 알 수 있게 된다.

Henry Gerhard Appenzeller was selected as a missionary of the NorthernMethodist Church along with Scranton Medical Missionary at the request of EmperorGojong for official education and medical missionary work, and entered Korea. Afterentering Korea, he established Baejae School and Jeongdong Church and engagedin educational work, becoming a central figure in modern Korean education. Thispaper aims to examine Appenzeller’s educational philosophy that led modern Koreaneducation. To clarify this, we first examine the environment in which Appenzeller grew up in the United States. We also examine who influenced him religiously andthrough what educational environment his educational philosophy was formed. Weexamine the schools and important teachers at which he was influenced andeducated, including Franklin and Marshall College, which became a model formodern Korean education. We also examine the educational philosophy Appenzellerhad in Korea through these influences in the United States. Through this paper, wecan learn a little about the educational ideas and philosophy that Appenzeller hadwhile carrying out modern education in Korea.
