진성리더십의 패러다임으로 본 서애 류성룡

Ryu Seong-ryong’s Leadership from the Perspective of Authentic Leadership

본 연구의 목적은 서애 류성룡이 보여준 리더십의 근간을 그가 지녔던 진성성이라 보고, 최근 새로운 리더십의 패러다임으로 주목받고 있는 진성리더십의 관점에서 류성룡의 리더십을 분석하고 평가해 보는 것이다. 류성룡은 삶의 지침을제시하며 나침반 역할을 해주는 마음의 지도인 정신모형 Ⅱ(Know-Why Model)를 지니고 있었다. 이러한 정신모형 안에는 조선의 자강이라는 사명, 백성들의 편안한 삶이라는 비전, 애민(愛民)이라는 핵심가치가 잘 구성되어 있었고, 이것이 류성룡과 다른 유사 리더들을 구별해주는 특징이었다. 진성리더십의 핵심 구성요소인 자기인식, 자기규제, 관계적 투명성, 균형있는정보처리에 해당하는 리더 행동들을 도출한 후에, 류성룡이 실제로 이러한 행동들을 얼마나 보여주었는지를 확인해 봄으로써 류성룡의 진성리더십을 평가해 보았다. 이를 통해 류성룡은 높은 감수성과 도덕성을 지녔으며, 타인과 솔직한 관계를 유지하고 합리적 판단을 하는 높은 수준의 진성리더십을 발휘한 리더였음을 알 수 있었다. 비전제시 능력과 실행력을 기준으로 류성룡의 리더십을 분석해본 결과, 류성룡은 조직의 미션과 비전에 대한 명확한 인식과 함께 이를 실천하기 위한 실행력을 겸비한 진성 변혁적 리더였다. 임진왜란이라는 국가적 위기에 탐욕과 연기가 아닌 진정성을 생명으로 명과 왜의 조선분할 획책을 막아내고, 조선의 자강만이 살 길이며 백성들의 삶을 편안하게 해야만 나라의 중흥도 있을 수 있다는 신념을 숱한 어려움 속에서도 몸소 실천한 류성룡이야말로 오늘날 우리가 원하는‘진성리더십의 원형’임을 알 수 있었다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze and reassess Ryu Seong-ryong’s leadership from the perspective of authentic Leadership, which has recently drawn attention as a new paradigm of leadership. Ryu Seong-ryong had the “Know-Why Model,” a map of the mind, which offers guidelines and compass of life. Within this mental model were the mission of Joseon’s self-reliance, the vision of peaceful livelihood for the people, and fraternity, which distinguishes Ryu Seong-ryong from other leaders. After deriving leadership behaviors that correspond to self-awareness, self-regulation, relational transparency, and balanced information processing, Ryu Sung-ryong’s true leadership was evaluated by checking how much he actually showed these behaviors. Through this, we can see that Ryu Seong-ryong was a leader with a high level of authentic leadership who maintained honest relationships with others and made rational judgments with a high level of sensitivity and morality. After analyzing Ryu Seong-ryong’s leadership based on his ability to present and execute visions, he was a authentic transformational leader who combined the organization’s clear perception of its mission and vision with the execution power to implement them. It is clear that Ryu Seong-ryong’s story is a prototype of the authentic leadership that we want today because he prevented the division of Joseon between Ming and Japan by his authenticity rather than greed and acting, in the national crisis of the Japanese Invasion of Korea and practiced the belief that Joseon’s self-reliance was the only way to live and that only when the people’s lives are comfortable, the revival of the country can be achieved.
