류성룡의 심학과 경세 활동 - 마음사회학적 접근

A Study of Ryu Seong-ryong's Learning of the Mind (心學) and His Statecraft Activities : In the Perspective of the Sociology of the Heart (MAEUM)

류성룡은 한국 성리학의 특징인 심학의 대가인 동시에 영의정으로서 전란을극복하는데 결정적인 공헌을 한 탁월한 경세가였다. 이에 이 연구에서는 심학자로서 류성룡의 마음사상과 경세가로서 류성룡의 경세활동 사이의 관계를 마음사회학적으로 이해해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 제2장에서는 이론적 논의를 통하여 마음과 사회 사이의 상호의존성 및 상호침투성을 잘 설명할 수 있는 마음사회학적이론 틀을 제시하였다. 이어서 제3장에서는 ‘천수인사상참’이란 류성룡의 주장을 토대로 하여, 류성룡이 하늘의 운수와 인간의 일이 서로 의존하고 서로 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 심학사상을 가졌음을 실증하였다. 제4장에서는 이러한 류성룡의 심학사상적 특징이 그의 경세활동에 반영되었을 것이란 가정하에, 이를 실증하고자 하였다. 제4장 1절은 류성룡의 심학적 특징이 인사정책을 통해 사회적으로 발현되었음을 실증하였고, 제4장 2절에서는 류성룡 심학의 또 다른특징 즉 마음 밖에서 발생하는 자연적 현상이나 사회적 현상적 현상에 대해서는 정책적 개입을 통해서 해결해야 한다는 특징을 실증하였다. 이상의 논의를 통하여 이 글에서는 류성룡의 마음사회학적 해석이 두 가지큰 함의를 가질 수 있음을 밝혔다. 첫째는 심학의 대가로서 류성룡의 삶과 탁월한 경세가로서 류성룡의 삶을 총체적이고 수미일관하게 이해할 수 있는 의의를 가질 수 있었다. 둘째는 다양한 사회이론들을 반증하고 비판적으로 극복할 수 있는 이론적 의의를 가질 수 있었다.

Ryu Seong-ryong was a master in the learning of the heart, which was the core of Korean Neo-Confucianism. At the same time, he was an excellent statesman who as premier made tremendous contributions during the Imjin War. This article attempts to address the relationship betweeen Ryu’s Learning of the Mind and his statecraft activities from the perspective of the heart(MAEUM)-sociology. In Chapter 2, this article presents a theoretical framework for the sociology of heart that can explain the interdependence and inter-penetration of the heart and society. In Chapter 3, this article will show that Seo-ae's claim that “heaven’s numbers and human affairs interact (天數人事相參)” speaks to the interdependence of heavenly phenomena and human affairs. Chapter 4 further proves the assumption that Seo-ae’s psychological state of mind was reflected in his statecraft activities. Chapter 4, Section 1, demonstrates that the characteristics of Heart-thought of Seo-ae were socially expressed through the policy of human affairs, and in Chapter 4, Section 2, proves Seo Ae's Claim that policy interventions should be made for natural or social phenomena. In conclusion, this study attempts to gain a holistic and coherent understanding of Seo-ae’s Learning of the Mind and his statecraft. In this light, this article might suggest alternatives to diverse social theories.
