This study aims to phenomenologically explore the effects of ChatGPT-based English writing activities using the familiar story of Peter Pan with university students. Eight participants engaged in a structured writing activity and were later interviewed using semi-structured protocols to capture their subjective experiences. Data were analyzed following Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. The results revealed four essential themes: emotional stability, improvement in cognitive strategies, enhanced linguistic performance, and perceived limitations. ChatGPT contributed to emotional relief and facilitated the use of metacognitive strategies such as self-reflection and self-correction. Participants also reported improvements in expression and writing quality. However, concerns were raised about the potential decline in independent thinking due to frequent reliance on AI. Based on these findings, pedagogical suggestions for integrating AI feedback into university English writing instruction are discussed.
