This paper discusses the value and necessity of education utilizing film and literary narratives through a case study of the course <Understanding British Society and Culture>. Education utilizing narratives helps to foster a broader understanding of a society and culture by enabling knowledge and information to be flexibly connected and promoting diversity of thought. Additionally, it cultivates literacy skills that allow learners to critically recognize and utilize diverse information, making it beneficial in itself for learners. This course covers two films and several literary works over the course of one semester. This paper will focus on the film “Spencer”, released in 2021, and Beatrix Potter’s “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, published in 1901. Through “Spencer”, we will examine British society through the eyes of Diana Spencer, the former Princess of Wales, and then compare and analyze the central narratives and images of “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” found in the film to reflect on British society and culture, where the past and present coexist.
