장신구의 상징성과 에리히 프롬의 사랑 개념에 대한 고찰 - 해외 명품 주얼리 브랜드 디자인 사례를 중심으로

The Symbolism of Jewelry as a Reflection of Erich Fromm's Philosophy of Love : With a Focus on Design Cases from Global Luxury Jewelry Brands

본 논문은 에리히 프롬의 『사랑의 기술』을 이론적 기반으로 삼아, 사랑이라는 인간 존재의 본질적 행위가 장신구를 통해 어떻게 외화 되고, 그 관계가 현대 사회에서 어떤 의미를 지니는지를 고찰한다. 프롬은 사랑을 단순한 감정이 아니라 훈련과 성숙을 필요로 하는 능동적 기술로 정의하며, 진정한 사랑은 책임, 존경, 이해, 배려에 기초한다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 사랑의 구성 요소들이 장신구라는 감각적 상징물에 어떻게 투영되는지를 이론적으로 분석하고, 이를 통해 장신구가 단순한 미적 대상이나 소비재를 넘어, 관계의 깊이와 지속성을 시각적으로 표현하며, 사랑의 감정과 태도를 실천하는 매개체로서 기능함을 증명하는 데 목적이 있다. 특히 자본주의 소비문화 속에서 장신구가 사랑을 기억하고 실천하며 지속시키는 중요한 실천적 기술로서의 역할을 수행함을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 현재 판매 중인 해외 명품 브랜드의 컬렉션 주얼리를 접목하여 분석함으로써, 사랑의 상징이 어떻게 상업적 디자인에 반영되고 해석되는지를 실증적으로 탐구하였다.

This study is based on Erich Fromm’s The Art of Loving and examines how love, as an essential aspect of human existence, is externalized through jewelry, and what this relationship signifies in contemporary society. Fromm defines love not as a mere emotion but as an active skill that requires practice and maturity, arguing that genuine love is grounded in responsibility, respect, understanding, and care. The present research aims to theorize directly how these components of love are projected and mediated within jewelry as a sensory symbol and to reveal their functioning through analysis. Jewelry functions not merely as an aesthetic object or consumer good but as a mediator that visually expresses the depth and continuity of relationships, enabling the practice of love’s emotions and attitudes. In particular, this research seeks to clarify how, within capitalist consumer culture, jewelry constitutes a part of the practical skill that helps remember, enact, and sustain love. To achieve this, the study empirically explores how symbols of love are reflected and interpreted in commercial designs by incorporating collections of jewelry currently retailed by overseas luxury brands.
