Study on the Synthesis of Benzotriazole Derivatives and Evaluation of Their UV Absorption Properties for Potential Application in Cosmetics

This study evaluates the UV-blocking efficacy of a cosmetic formulation containing benzotriazole-based compounds (BT-1), targeting both UVA and UVB protection. To address limitations of conventional UV filters—such as low photostability, potential skin irritation, and environmental concerns, a novel benzotriazole-derived UV absorber was synthesized. The compound demonstrated strong absorption within the 290-360 nm range verified through UV-Vis spectrophotometry, indicating effective broad-spectrum protection. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed improved thermal stability, with decomposition temperatures exceeding 280°C. Additionally, excellent optical stability was confirmed through measurements of 'color of solution' and 'heat stability', verifying suitability for cosmetic applications. These results suggest that benzotriazole-derived UV absorbers are promising candidates for high-performance and environmentally safer sunscreen formulations.
