A Study on the Classification of Curriculum and Perceptions of Job Skills in Makeup and Beauty

Makeup has evolved from a simple act of decoration into a significant means of enhancing personal beauty, improving self-image, and expressing individuality. Beyond its aesthetic role, modern makeup serves functional purposes such as maintaining skin health and protecting against environmental factors. Advances in cosmetic science have further expanded its objectives to include medical benefits, such as whitening and anti-aging effects. The functions of makeup can be categorized into three dimensions: (1) physical or aesthetic, which refines appearance and balances facial features; (2) social, which creates positive impressions and conveys roles or social status; and (3) psychological, which enhances self-esteem and emotional stability. As an integrated form of artistic, functional, and social expression, makeup continues to develop in response to cultural trends and the universal pursuit of beauty, leading to increasing specialization. This study surveyed beauty industry professionals with over five years of experience to classify the makeup beauty field into detailed categories. Five primary categories were identified: beauty makeup, art makeup, special effects makeup, semi-permanent makeup, and makeup-related curricula. Subcategories include wedding makeup, profile makeup, daily makeup, broadcast makeup, stage makeup, character makeup, art mask, fantasy makeup, prosthetic makeup, wound makeup, airbrush, body painting, funeral makeup, semi-permanent eyebrow, eyeliner, and lip makeup, scalp micropigmentation (SMP), scar coverage, eyelashes, makeup design, photography, color theory, coordinating, beauty editing, and cosmeticpsychology. The findings of this classification provide a structured framework for professional training, curriculum development, and industry specialization, offering valuable insights for enhancing the professionalism and educational standards of the makeup beauty sector.
