세대효과와 투표선택 : 2017-2024년 한국 선거를 중심으로

Generational Effects and Voting Choices : The 2017-2024 Korean Elections

본 연구는 최근 치러진 선거에서 세대균열이 투표선택에 영향을 미치고 있는지를 경험적으로 검증하는데 목적이 있다. 특히, 세대를 청년세대, 중년세대, 장년세대로 구분하고, 다시 세분화하여 여섯 세대로 구분하여 검증하였다. 제19대 대통령선거부터 제22대 국회의원선거를 분석한 결과, 본 연구는 세대가 한국 선거에서 나타나고 있지만, 아직 지역이나 이념을 대체할 만한 주요 변수로 보기는 어려웠다. 그러나 세대 간 투표선택에 차이가 나타난 점은 앞으로 선거에서 세대균열에 주목할 필요가 있다고 할 수 있다.

This paper attempts to examine the effectiveness of the generational cleavage on voting in recent Korean elections. To this end, it first categorizes voters into three broad age groups—youth, middle-aged, and elderly—and then further subdivides them into six generational cohorts. Utilizing survey data from the 19th presidential elections to the 22nd National Assembly election, revealed significant influences between generational cleavage and voting choice of South Korean elections. However, although generational cleavages have some influence, they have not yet emerged as dominant factors compared to regionalism or ideological orientation. Nevertheless, the disparities in voting preferences across generational groups indicate that generational factors are likely to have an increasingly significant impact on voting choices in future elections. The study concludes that generational cleavages warrant greater attention in the analysis of Korean electoral politics.
