ESG성과와 재무성과: ESG 생태계 관점의 고찰

ESG performance and financial performance

ESG는 지속가능성 이슈로서 정부 정책수립 과정과 기업 전략개발에 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 본 눈문은 한국에 있어서ESG관련 정부의 정책과 민간기업들의 상황을 분석하고 있다. 앞 부분에서 한국에서 ESG 정부정책관련 내용을 정리하였다. ESG 인프라 개선 계획, ESG 정보 공시 제도, ESG 평가, ESG 금융현황 및 녹색 택소노미 등에 대하여 정리하였다. 나머지 부분에서는 한국 민간기업들에서 ESG 성과가 기업의 재무성과에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 알아보기 위하여 통계분석을 수행하였다. 10년 기간에 대한 통계분석 결과, 한국기업에 있어서 ESG 성과는 회계이익률로서 ROA에는 정의 영향을 미치는 것이 의미있는 것으로 파악되었으나, 자본시장에서의 성과인 주가수익률과의 관계에서 의미있는 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 두 부분의 분석을 바탕으로 정부의 ESG 정책 수립과 기업의 전략개발에 줄 수 있는 시사점들이 제시되었다.

ESG, as sustainability issue, is stressed in both processes of government policy making and corporate strategy development. The purpose of this paper is examining the ESG situations related to both the government and private companies in Korea. The first part investigates the diverse policies and initiatives related to ESG in Korea. In the first part, ESG infrastructure advancement plan, ESG information disclosure, ESG rating and ESG finance status are described. In the second part, statistical analysis is performed to show the impact of corporate ESG performance on firm performance in Korea. Positive relationship is significantly found between ESG performance and profitability measured by ROA (return on asset) but the relationship between ESG performance and stock price return did not provide significant result. Based on our analysis in the first and second part, some implications for ESG policies and corporate strategy are discussed.
