이익(李瀷)의 음양(陰陽) 방술(方術)에 관한 인식의 체계

The System of Yi Ik's Perception of Yin-Yang Arts and Divination Techniques

본고는 조선 실학자의 지적 관심과 의식 세계를 분석하는 작업의 일환으로서, 이익(李瀷)이 음양 방술에 관하여 어떤 견해를 표명하였는지 살펴본 것이다. 괴력난신(怪力亂神)과 관련된 것의 언급을 금기시하던 조선 사회에서 이익(李瀷)이 음양 방술에 관한 견해를 본격적이고 전면적으로 개진할 수 있었던 이유는 그가 지식에 대하여 개방적 자세를 지니고 있었기 때문이다. 이익은 세상의 수많은 존재와 지식을 무작정 부정하는 것을 무지의 소치로 보았다. 이익이 음양 방술 중에서 인정한 것은 택일(擇日)･점성(占星)･사주(四柱)이다. 그리고 귀천(貴賤)･빈부(貧富)･수요(壽夭)･급제(及第) 연도 맞추기는 부분적으로 인정하였다. 반면 성(姓) 맞추기･부모의 나이 맞추기는 부정하였다. 그리고 인정 여부와 차원을 달리하여 풍수(風水)와 무당은 배척하였으니, 그것이 풍속을 혼란하게 만든다는 이유 때문이다. 이익은 음양 방술의 인정 여부를 논증할 때 단순한 억측을 피하고 신뢰할 수 있는 문헌과 자신의 견문, 경험을 적절하게 조합하는 형식을 사용함으로써 설복력을 제고하였다.

This paper, as part of an effort to analyze the intellectual interests and consciousness of a Joseon Silhak (Practical Learning) scholar, examines the views expressed by Yi Ik(李瀷) on the arts of yin-yang and various divination techniques. In a Joseon society that tabooed the mention of anything related to “strange phenomena, force, disorder, and spirits” (goeryeongnansin), Yi Ik was able to fully and comprehensively develop his views on these arts due to his open-minded attitude toward knowledge. Yi Ik believed that unconditionally denying the myriad beings and forms of knowledge in the world stemmed from ignorance. Among the yin-yang arts, Yi Ik acknowledged taek-il (day selection), jeomseong (astrology), and saju (the Four Pillars of Destiny). He partially accepted the ability to predict matters such as nobility or humbleness, poverty or wealth, longevity or premature death, and the year of passing the state examination. On the other hand, he denied the possibility of predicting a person's surname or their parents' ages. Separately from acceptance or denial, he rejected pungsu (feng shui) and shamanism on the grounds that they disrupted social customs and order. When arguing for or against the validity of these yin-yang arts, Yi Ik enhanced the persuasiveness of his claims by avoiding simple speculation and instead appropriately combining reliable literature with his own observations and experiences.
