운포(雲圃) 이중린(李中麟) 간찰로 본 19세기 말 사돈간 교유 양상

Interactions between In-Laws in the Late 19th Century as Seen through the Letters of Yunpo(雲圃) Yi Jung-rin(李中麟)

본고는 운포(雲圃) 이중린(李中麟, 1838~1917)이 사돈 운재(雲齋) 김병황(金秉璜, 1845~1914)에게 보낸 29통의 간찰을 대상으로, 원문을 탈초하고 번역하여 그 내용을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 19세기 후반 사돈간 교유의 실제 모습을 구체적으로 밝히고자 하였다. 간찰에 나타난 교유 양상은 크게 네 가지로 정리된다. 첫째, 딸의 친정 방문과 시집 귀행 일정을 둘러싼 협의로, 혼인을 매개로 한 사돈 관계의 특수성을 보여준다. 둘째, 치통과 집수리, 농사 노동, 혼수 마련의 곤란 등 생계 현실에 대한 토로로, 생활의 곤궁을 구체적으로 드러내면서 인척 간의 정서적 공감과 위로를 이끌어 내었다. 셋째, 외세의 침투, 역병의 창궐, 관리 부패와 기강 해이 등 시국에 대한 우려와 비판으로, 당대의 정치･사회적 불안을 직접적으로 반영하였다. 넷째, 시문 교환과 고사 인용, 유머와 겸양의 표현을 통한 정서적 교류로, 문화적 공동체 의식을 심화시켰다. 이상의 분석을 통해, 이중린과 김병황 간의 간찰은 단순한 사돈간 안부 교환을 넘어 사돈 관계를 매개로 한 사회적･문화적 소통의 장으로 기능했음을 확인할 수 있었다.

This study examines twenty-nine letters written by Yunpo(雲圃) Yi Jung-rin(李中麟, 1838~1917) to his in-law Unjae(雲齋) Kim Byeong-hwang(金秉璜, 1845~1914). The original texts were transcribed and translated, and their contents were analyzed to shed light on the concrete aspects of in-law correspondence in the late nineteenth century. The letters reveal four major aspects of interaction. First, negotiations over the daughter’s visits to her natal home and her return to her husband’s household demonstrate the particular characteristics of in-law relations mediated by marriage. Second, expressions of livelihood difficulties—such as toothaches, house repairs, farming labor, and the burdens of preparing dowries—expose the hardships of everyday life and elicited emotional sympathy and consolation among relatives. Third, concerns over contemporary affairs and social critique—covering foreign encroachment, outbreaks of epidemics, corruption of officials, and decline of public discipline—directly reflected the political and social anxieties of the time. Fourth, emotional exchange and literary communication, through the exchange of poetry, citation of classical allusions, humor, and modest expressions, served to deepen cultural solidarity and communal consciousness. Through these analyses, it is confirmed that the letters between Yi Jung-rin and Kim Byeong-hwang functioned not merely as records of family greetings, but as a venue of social and cultural communication mediated by in-law relations.
