『장자』에서 유가 비판론의 현대 윤리학적 고찰

Reconstructing Zhuangzi's Critique of Confucianism from the Perspective of Contemporary Ethics

『장자』의 유가 비판론, 그 대채적인 요지는 표준적인 철학사 서술을 통해서도 잘 알려져있다. 그러나 적실한 철학적 맥락화를 경유한다면 『장자』와 유가 사상가들의 논변을 동아시아 전통 사상 내부의 특수한 논점이 아닌 현대 철학의 시의적인 논점과 소통할 수 있는 철학적 자원의 형태로 재해석할 수 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로, 『장자』에 등장하는 유가 비판론을 현대 윤리학, 그 중에서도 덕윤리의 견지에서 고찰한다. 유가 철학과 덕윤리간에는 그 핵심 입론의 차원에서 상당한 친연성이 확인된다. 그렇다면, 유가 철학을 향한 전통적인 비판론을 덕윤리적 입론에 제기되는 주요 비판론과 비교해 볼 여지도 충분하다고 할 수 있다. 『장자』의 유 비판론은 춘추전국시대 사상가들의 논변 속에서 현대 윤리학의 첨예한 논쟁을 상기시키는 담론을 재구성함으로써, 현대 철학과 소통할 수 있는 철학적 잠재성을 발견할 수 있다는 의미를 부여할 수 있다. 또한 이러한 학술적 시도는 도덕교육의 문제에 적지 않은 함의를 갖는다. 기본적으로 성실, 배려, 정의, 책임등의 덕목을 내면화하고 이에 대한 실천 역량을 함양하는 것을 기본 골자로 하는 도덕교육에서 진지하게 응답해야 할 문제이다. 또한 동양과 서양철학 및 윤리학의 내용 요소가 어떤 접점을 형성할 수 있는지 그 가능성을 모색한다는 의미가 있다.

The general outline of the Zhuangzi's critique of Confucianism is well-established through standard narratives in the history of philosophy. However, by properly contextualizing their arguments, the debate between Zhuangzi and Confucian thinkers can be reinterpreted not merely as a particularistic issue internal to traditional East Asian thought, but as a philosophical resource capable of engaging with contemporary issues in modern philosophy. Based on this premise, this paper examines the critique of Confucianism found in the Zhuangzi from the standpoint of contemporary ethics, particularly that of virtue ethics. A significant affinity is often identified between the core theses of Confucian philosophy and virtue ethics. This suggests that there is ample room to compare the traditional critiques leveled against Confucianism with the major criticisms directed at virtue ethics. By reconstructing a discourse from the arguments of the Warring-States period that is reminiscent of acute debates in contemporary ethics, Zhuangzi's critique reveals its potential to engage with modern philosophy. Furthermore, this scholarly attempt holds significant implications for moral education, raising questions that must be seriously addressed by any educational framework based on internalizing virtues such as sincerity, care, justice, and responsibility. Finally, this study is also significant for its exploration of potential points of contact between the core tenets of Eastern and Western philosophy and ethics.
