A Study of David Hawkes’s Translation of Yuanchun’s Judgment Poem in Dream of the Red Chamber: A Hallidayan Experiential Perspective

This study, grounded in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, focuses on the experiential function in analyzing David Hawkes’s English translation of Yuanchun’s judgment poem in Dream of the Red Chamber. It explores how Hawkes, through lexical choice, syntactic adjustment, and contextual construction, successfully reproduces the conceptual meanings of the original text while effectively conveying its symbolic imagery and cultural connotations. A comparative analysis between the source text and the translation demonstrates that Hawkes skillfully employs the transitivity system to represent the experiential world of the poem, while his strategic translation adjustments enhance both readability and contextual appropriateness. The study concludes that Hawkes’s translation strategies not only faithfully reconstruct the imagery and meaning of the original at the level of experiential function, but also provide valuable theoretical insights for the cross-cultural transmission of the poetic language of Dream of the Red Chamber.

本研究基于韩礼德的系统功能语言学理论，聚焦于概念功能，对《红楼梦》中元春判词的霍克斯（David Hawkes）英译本进行深入分析。研究探讨霍克斯如何通过词汇选择、句法调整及语境构建，使译文精准再现判词的概念意义，并有效传递其象征意象与文化内涵。通过原文与译文的对比分析，研究发现，霍克斯在翻译过程中充分运用及物性系统，准确再现了判词的经验世界，同时借助适当的译法调节，增强了译文的可读性和语境适应性。研究认为，霍克斯的翻译策略不仅在概念功能层面实现了对原作意象与意义的忠实再现，也为《红楼梦》诗性语言的英译提供了跨文化传播的理论参考。
