Elderly individuals who have lost their only child are confronted with issues such as health, economy, and elderly care. With the acceleration of the digitalization process, these elderly individuals are facing even more severe “digital divide” problems. Although the current society has already paid attention to the “digital divide” issue among the elderly, the “digital divide” predicament of the elderly who have lost their only child has its particularity and requires targeted research and analysis. This study focuses on the group of elderly individuals who have lost their only child in the ZY Street of Kunming City. Through questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews, it deeply explores the special “digital divide” predicament they face in the digitalization process and the core needs for overcoming this predicament, providing reference and guidance for subsequent research and services. The study found that the digital divide predicament of the elderly who have lost their only child is significantly unique due to the absence of their children, the breakdown of social support networks, and their own physical and mental characteristics. Their needs to overcome this predicament essentially involve adaptive reconstruction after the collapse of family functions, mainly manifested as survival needs, emotional substitution needs, system adaptation needs, and dignity protection needs. Based on the analysis of the survey results, the study proposes that government, community, and social work should collaborate at multiple levels to intervene systematically to bridge the digital divide of the elderly who have lost their only child, enabling them to better integrate into the digital society and enjoy their later years with peace of mind.
