Modern Reinterpretations and Content Applications of Korean–Vietnamese Religious Culture : Focusing on the Kitchen God Belief

This study aims to compare and analyze how the Kitchen God (조왕, 竈王) belief in Korea and Vietnam is represented and utilized in contemporary me dia content. First, the research examines the characteristics and functions of the Kitchen God belief in the traditional cultures of both countries. It th en investigates in detail the ways in which this belief is reproduced in mod ern content such as mass media and film. The comparative analysis reveals that, in both Korea and Vietnam, the traditional symbolism of the Kitchen God has been reinterpreted in modern contexts and incorporated into popul ar culture and commercial content. Notably, differences were observed in n arrative structures, visual representation methods, and media-specific recep tion patterns. These findings suggest that the Kitchen God belief, beyond its role as a folk religion, holds potential as a cultural resource within the con temporary content industry, and they offer directions for Korea–Vietnam cu ltural exchange and for the development of content grounded in traditional culture.
