결혼이주여성들의 수행성과 종교공동체의 역동적 변화: 세계평화통일가정연합을 중심으로

Performativity of Marriage-Migrant Women and the Dynamic Construction of Religious Communities: Focusing on the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification

본 논문은 세계평화통일가정연합의 일본인 결혼이주여성들의 수행성과 그들의 삶이 70여년의 역사를 이어오고 있는 한국 가정연합 공동체의 정체성과 종교문화에 현재 미치고 있는 영향을 분석한다. 연구대상인 한국 가정연합의 일본여성들은 종교적 결혼이주를 하여 한국에 정착하여 살고 있다. 이들에 대한 기존연구가 주로 사회학적·인류학적 차원에서 이주여성의 다문화 적응이나 가족문제에 초점을 두었다면, 본 연구는 종교학적 관점에서 이들의 이주와 실천이 종교공동체 자체를 어떻게 변화시키는가에 주목한다. 이를 위해 주디스 버틀러의 수행성(performativity) 이론을 적용하여 일본인 결혼이주여성들이 젠더·민족· 종교 정체성을 중층적으로 수행하면서 가정연합의 종교적 담론과 조직, 공동체문화를 새롭게 구성해온 과정을 고찰하였다. 연구를 통해 이들의 수행은 종교의 교리적 이념이나 기존의 젠더, 민족(국가) 정체성이나 역할을 수행하기도 하였으나, 일방적으로 단순한 종속적 역할에 머무르지 않고, 가정과 교회, 지역사회를 매개로 그들이 처한 상황 속에서 이를 변형시커나 조정하면서 초국가적 정체성과 가정연합의 종교적 결혼관이나 평화 담론을구체화하는 적극적 행위로 작용하였음을 살펴보았다. 가정연합의 종교적 결혼이주 여성에 대한 이러한 분석을 통해 본 연구는 이주가 종교의 현재와 미래를형성하는 중요한 동력임을 밝히고자 하였으며, 이주와 종교 연구에서 간과되어온 종교학적 사례 연구의 필요성을 제기하였다.

This paper analyzes the performativity of Japanese religious marriage-migrant women in the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) and examines how their lives continue to influence the identity and religious culture of the Korean FFWPU community with its seventy-year history. These women, who migrated to Korea through religiously motivated marriages, have mostly been studied from sociological or anthropological perspectives focusing on multicultural adaptation or family issues. In contrast, this study approaches them from a religious studies perspective, asking how migration and religious practice reshape the religious community itself. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, the paper investigates how Japanese marriage-migrant women perform layered identities of gender, ethnicity, and religion, thereby reconstructing the discourse, organization, and culture of the FFWPU community. The study shows that their practices, while sometimes reproducing doctrinal ideals and traditional gender or ethnic roles, do not remain confined to passive subordination. Rather, through family, church, and local society, they transform and negotiate these roles, acting as agents who concretize transnational identities and reframe the FFWPU’s religious understanding of marriage and peace. By highlighting these dynamics, the paper demonstrates that migration is a vital force shaping the present and future of religion, and underscores the need for religion-focused case studies in the broader field of migration and religion research.
