Hwang Sun-myung and Social History of Religion in the Period of Choseon Dynasty

종교학자 황선명의 학문 세계를 조명하는 방법으로는 여러 가지가 있다. 먼저그가 은사였던 장병길의 종교학을 어떻게 계승하였는지, 그러면서도 그는 어떤면에서 자신만의 학문 세계를 구축하였는지 등을 다룰 수 있다. 이와 더불어장병길의 종교학을 이어받았던 여타의 종교학자들과 황선명 사이에 어떠한 학문적 차이가 있었는지를 밝히는 작업도 함께 진행할 필요가 있다. 이러한 접근은해방 이후 현대 한국 종교학의 전승과 발전이라는 측면에서 황선명의 위상을평가하는 시도라고 하겠다. 또한 황선명이 자신의 저술에서 인용하고 있는 논저들을 추적하여 그의 학문적독서 범위를 파악하고, 어떠한 종교학 사조에서 영향을 받았는지를 밝히는 방법도 가능하다. 황선명은 사회학자 에밀 뒤르켐과 막스 베버, 인류학자 말리놉스키와 래드클리프-브라운 등 서구 학자들의 저술을 다채롭게 응용하는 모습을 보여주었다. 그러므로 황선명에게 영향을 준 서구 학자들과 그들의 저술이 무엇이었는지를 살펴보는 작업은 1960년대와 1970년대 한국의 종교학자들이 어떤 주제에 관심을 두고 있었는지, 그 시대의 학문적 화두가 무엇이었는지를 보여주는데에는 최적의 방법일 수 있겠다. 황선명의 생애를 추모하고, 학문적 업적을 제대로 평가하려면 그가 남긴 주요저작들을 점검하는 일이 가장 먼저 이루어져야 한다. 그런 뒤에야 다양한 후속연구가 가능해질 것이다. 이러한 문제의식 아래에 이 글은 황선명의 주요 저작중의 하나를 다루고자 한다. 《조선조 종교사회사 연구》는 그의 주저 가운데 하나이면서, 당대까지 이루어진 조선시대 종교사 연구를 망라한 역작이다. 종교학만이 아니라 역사학, 민속학, 인류학, 정치학 등 인접 학문 분야의 조선시대 종교연구와 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있다. 《조선조 종교사회사 연구》에 들어 있는 황선명의 문제의식, 조선시대 종교사를 바라보는 관점과 접근 방법, 그가 제창한 종교사회사 탐구의 특징이 잘 드러나는 몇몇 주제들에 대한 소개와 비평을 제시할 것이다. 아울러 황선명의 선구적인 연구를 뒤따르고 있는 후배 종교학자들의 학문적성과도 함께 소개하겠다. 이러한 접근을 통하여 황선명이 한국 종교학에 남긴족적을 확인할 수 있으리라고 본다.

There are several ways to illuminate the academic world of religious scholar Hwang Sun-myung. First, we can discuss how he inherited the religious studies of his mentor Chang Byeong Gil, and how he built his own academic world while doing so. In addition, we need to investigate what academic differences there were between Hwang Sun-myung and other religious scholars who inherited Chang Byeong Gil’s religious studies. This approach can be said to be an attempt to evaluate Hwang Sun-myung’s status in terms of the succession and development of modern Korean religious studies after liberation. It is also possible to trace the articles cited by Hwang Sun-myung in his writings to determine the scope of his academic reading and to reveal which religious studies trends influenced him. Hwang Sun-myung showed a diverse application of the writings of Western scholars, including sociologists Emile Durkheim and Max Weber, and anthropologists Malinowski and Radcliffe-Brown. Therefore, examining the Western scholars and their writings that influenced Hwang Sun-myung may be the best way to show what topics Korean religious scholars were interested in in the 1960s and 1970s and what the academic agendas of the time were. In order to commemorate Hwang Sun-myung’s life and properly evaluate his academic achievements, the first step should be to examine his major works. Then will various follow-up studies about him become possible. Under this idea, this article will deal with one of Hwang Sun-myung’s major works. Study on the Social History of Religion in the Choseon Dynasty is one of his major works and a masterpiece that encompasses the research on the history of religion in the Choseon Dynasty up to the present day. It is closely related to the research on religion in related academic fields such as history, folklore, anthropology, and political science, as well as religious studies. I will present an introduction and critique of several topics that clearly reveal Hwang Sun-myung’s awareness of the problem, his perspective and approach to the history of religion in the Choseon Dynasty, and the characteristics of his exploration of the social history of religion. In addition, I will introduce the academic achievements of later religious scholars who have followed Hwang Sun-myung’s pioneering research. Through this approach, I believe that we will be able to confirm the footprints that Hwang Sun-myung left in Korean religious studies.
