기원전 5세기 후반에 소피스테스로 활동한 힙피아스는 수사, 법률과 규범, 역사와 시 그리고 문법, 아울러 수학과 기하학 등 여러 영역에서 다양한 논의를 펼치며 많은 보수를 받았다고 전해진다. 그러한 유명세에도 불구하고, 힙피아스의 출생과 사망에 관한 사료는 드물어, 대략적인 생몰 연대만이 추정되고 있을 뿐이다. 그러나 힙피아스의 연배와 당시 인물들과의 관계 그리고 그의 딸과 이소크라테스 사이의 결혼 및 도시에 맞선 그의 계략 등을 보고한 사료들 또한 일부 전해진다. 이를 토대로 그의 생몰 연대를 보다 구체적으로 추적하면, 힙피아스는 기원전 465년경에 태어나 420년대에 30대 중반을 보냈으며, 기원전 398-395년 사이에 약 67-70세 정도의 나이로 사망했다고 확인할 수 있다.

Many sources document the activities and intellectual pursuits of Hippias the Sophist in the late 5th century BCE, according to which he practiced in various fields such as rhetoric, law, custom, poetry, grammar, and mathematics and geometry, achieving considerable fame and commanding substantial wages for his expertise. Despite his reputation, little is known about chronological details concerning his birth and death. Nonetheless, references to his age range and relations with contemporary thinkers, his alleged plot against the city, and the marriage of Isocrates to his daughter have been preserved. Based on these accounts, Hippias’ birth is estimated to have occurred around 465 BCE, and his death between 398 and 395 BCE.
