본 연구는 고대 로마 제국과 한 제국 간 교류에서 실크로드가 수행한 경제적·문화적 기능을 분석하고, 이를 통해 실크로드의 역사적 의미를 재조명하고자 한다. 실크로드는 단순한 무역로를 넘어, 상품과 사상, 기술, 예술 등 다양한 문화적 요소가 교류되는 핵심 매개체로 기능하였다. 경제적 측면에서 비단, 향료, 귀금속 등 고부가가치 상품의 이동은 양 제국의 상업 활동과 시장 확대를 촉진하고, 지역 경제 구조와 사회적 부의 분배에 실질적 영향을 미쳤다. 또한 이러한 교역은 화폐 유통, 운송 기술, 상업 제도 발전을 촉진하며 제국 간 경제적 상호 의존성을 강화하였다. 문화적 측면에서는 실크로드가 동서 문명의 상호 이해와 수용을 가능하게 하는 ‘문화적 교량’ 역할을 수행하였다. 종교, 예술, 정치·행정 제도, 학문 등 다양한 지식과 관습이 교류되면서 양 제국 사회에 영향을 미쳤으며, 단순한 모방에 그치지 않고 각 문명의 독자적 발전과 융합을 촉진하였다. 불교, 천문학, 의학, 공예 기술 등 문화적 요소의 전파는 실크로드가 동서 문명 간 상호 연결성을 강화하는 결정적 요인임을 보여준다. 본 연구는 문헌과 고고학적 증거를 종합하여, 실크로드가 로마 제국과 한 제국 사이의 경제적·문화적 상호작용을 연결하는 핵심 통로였음을 논증한다. 이를 통해 고대 국제 교류사에서 실크로드의 전략적 중요성과 문명 간 상호작용의 의미를 재조명하며, 동서 문명의 상호 이해와 글로벌 교류의 역사적 배경을 이해하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

This study examines the economic and cultural functions of the Silk Road in facilitating exchanges between the ancient Roman Empire and the Han Empire, highlighting its historical significance. Far beyond a mere trade route, the Silk Road served as a vital conduit for the movement of goods, ideas, technologies, and artistic practices. Economically, the trade of high-value commodities such as silk, spices, and precious metals promoted commercial activity and market expansion in both empires, while influencing regional economic structures and wealth distribution. These exchanges also advanced monetary systems, transportation technologies, and commercial institutions, reinforcing economic interdependence between East and West. Culturally, the Silk Road acted as a “cultural bridge”, fostering mutual understanding and adaptation between civilizations. The circulation of religious beliefs, artistic styles, political and administrative systems, and scholarly knowledge shaped both societies, encouraging not mere imitation but independent development and cross-cultural synthesis. The diffusion of Buddhism, astronomy, medicine, and craft techniques exemplifies the Silk Road’s critical role in linking Eastern and Western civilizations. By integrating literary records and archaeological evidence, this study demonstrates that the Silk Road was central to the economic and cultural interactions between Rome and Han China. The findings underscore its strategic importance in ancient international exchange and illuminate how transcontinental networks facilitated intercultural dialogue. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of East-West relations and the historical foundations of global cultural and economic connectivity.
