A Study on the Russian Translation Strategies of Han Kang's “The Vegetarian” – The aesthetics of literary translation based on the literary communication model
- 92
The aim of this study is to broaden the existing Anglo-centric discourse on the translation of Han Kang’s novel “The Vegetarian” by thoroughly analyzing and systematizing the translation strategies in the Russian version, based on the literary communication model. From the perspective of literary communication, this study seeks to reconsider the traditional oppositional dichotomies in literary translation—such as accuracy versus readability and foreignization versus localization—by reestablishing translation strategies as complementary approaches within a multidimensional communicative framework. Furthermore, it redefines translation as an “act of communicating intercultural sensitivity” and an “act of creating communicative emotions,” rather than a mere process of linguistic reproduction. Theoretically, this study establishes and empirically examines the communicative structure of literary translation through a systematic analysis of the translation strategies used in rendering “The Vegetarian” into Russian on the base of literary communication model. The research tasks are as follows: First, to examine the literary communication model in relation to existing theories of literary translation as a preliminary step toward analyzing the Russian translation. Second, to conduct a comparative analysis between Han Kang’s Korean original “The Vegetarian” and its Russian translation. Third, to classify and systematize the translation strategies of the Russian version on the base of the literary communication model. Forth, to investigate the strategic choices made in the Russian translation in terms of literary communication, seeking balance and harmony between the source text and the translation, while identifying the problems and limitations of the Russian version. The significance of this study lies in its expansion of the discourse beyond Anglo-centric translation studies. While previous research on “The Vegetarian” has primarily focused on English translations, this study highlights the multilingual reception of Korean literature through the analysis of the Russian version. It is noteworthy that this research contributes to advancing Korean literary translation studies in a more diversified and balanced direction, moving beyond English-language bias.
