영미문학과 문화교육의 두 방향 : 통합과 분리를 넘어

Two Directions in English Literary and Cultural Education: Integration and Separation

이 논문의 목적은 2000년 이후 본격화된 국내 영미문학 수업 속 ‘문화교육’에 대한 논의 및 강의사례를 살펴보고, 두 필자가 각각 개발한 문화 수업 사례를 통해 기존 문화교육의 폭을 넓히는 것이다. 논문의 전반부에서는 문학 수업에서의 영상매체 활용에 관한 지난 사반세기의 담론을 짚어본다. ‘영문학의 위기’에 맞서 영상 텍스트를 문화교육이란 이름 아래 영문과의 범주로 끌어들이자는 주장은 큰 호응을 얻었고 영미문학 교육의 새 패러다임을 열었다. 그러나 종합예술인 영화를 문학 이해의 수단으로만 여기거나 문학 교수면 별도 훈련 없이 으레 문화도 가르칠 수 있다는 생각은 일종의 문학우월주의를 함의한다. 따라서 영문과의 문화교육은 문학과 영화의 고유한 미학적 방식을 간과하고 두 장르를 사회문화적 산물로만 취급해 오히려 문학교육과 문화교육 모두에 실패하는 것을 경계해야 한다. 글의 후반부에서는 두 필자의 수업을 각각 ‘분리’와 ‘통합’이라는 용어로 소개한다. 김수연의 <영상문화연구>가 문학과 영화의 분리를 전제한다면, 정유미의 <영문학과 미디어내러티브>는 게임, 숏폼 컨텐츠 등 다양한 현대문화 및 미디어를 통해 문학 이해를 증진하는 동시에 창의적 역량으로 연결시키는 통합적 방식을 지향한다. 결론에서는 지난 학기 두 필자가 팀티칭으로 진행한 <문화예술산업>을 언급하며, 오늘날 문화산업 분야의 실무 인재까지 양성해야 하는 ‘극한 직업’으로서 문학 교수의 도전과 과제에 대해 성찰해 보고자 한다.

This article examines debates surrounding the use of film in college-level English literature courses, which gained momentum around 2000 under the umbrella term “cultural education,” and presents two examples of such “culture” courses taught by the authors. The first section traces how the turn toward cultural education and audiovisual materials opened new pedagogical possibilities but also tended to reduce film to a supplementary role for a better understanding of literary themes and history. Such subordinating practices risk impoverishing appreciation of both media by neglecting their medium-specific characteristics and unique aesthetics. This tendency persists despite the diversification of film texts. The second section reports on two college courses: a film studies course (Soo Yeon Kim) and an “English Literature and Media Narratives” course (Youmi Jung). While Kim advocates for the separate treatment of literature and film to teach film as “film,” Jung endorses an integrative approach that incorporates contemporary media such as interactive storytelling. In the final section, this article reflects on “Culture and Arts Industry” course co-taught by the two authors last semester, reflecting on the evolving challenges faced by literature professors who must now train students not only in literary scholarship but also as practitioners ready for careers in the cultural industries.
