예술기반 연구 수행을 위한 방법론적 쟁점: 만화소설 형식의 논문 작성을 중심으로

Methodological Issues in Conducting Arts-Based Research: Focusing on a dissertation in the form of a graphic novel

본 연구는 예술기반 연구(arts-based research)라는 대안적 글쓰기 방식을 실행하는 과정에서 질적 연구자가 직면한 방법론적 쟁점을 비평적으로 분석하고, 이를 통해 그 실천적 대안과 학문적 가능성을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 연구자는 학위 논문 과정에서 시도한 만화소설 형식의 글쓰기를 중심으로, 다양한 산출물과 제작 기록을 검토하고 선행 연구와의 해석적 연계를 통해 연구 수행상의 쟁점을 네 가지 범주로 도출하였다. 첫째, 사회과학적 글쓰기의 논리적 인과성과 예술적 글쓰기의 서사적 구조 사이에서 발생하는 간극의 문제, 둘째, 예술적 표현 수단을 탐색하고 이를 바탕으로 연구 형식을 창조하는 과정에서의 어려움, 셋째, 예술기반 연구가 예술적 완성도와 학문적 타당성을 동시에 확보하기 위해 요구되는 비판적 성찰과 방법론적 고민, 넷째, 연구의 진행 과정에서 심사자와 연구자 간에 발생하는 간주관성과 주관성의 충돌로 인한 긴장과 조율의 문제이다. 이 연구의 결과는 예술을 단순한 표현 수단을 넘어 하나의 정당한 연구 방법으로 확장할 수 있는 가능성을 탐색하고, 질적 연구의 외연을 넓히는 데 기여할 것이다.

This study aims to critically analyze the methodological issues encountered by a qualitative researcher in the process of implementing arts-based research(ABR) as an alternative mode of academic writing, and, through this analysis, to explore its practical alternatives and scholarly potential. To this end, the researcher focused on arts-based writing in the form of a graphic novel, undertaken during the dissertation process, and examined diverse creative outputs and production records. In dialogue with prior studies, these materials were interpreted to identify four categories of methodological issues: (1) the gap between the logical causality of social science writing and the narrative structures of artistic writing; (2) the challenges of exploring artistic modes of expression and creating new research forms; (3) the demand for critical reflection and methodological rigor required to secure both artistic quality and academic validity; and (4) the tensions and negotiations arising from the interplay of intersubjectivity and subjectivity between examiners and the researcher. The findings indicate that arts can be extended beyond a mere means of expression to function as a legitimate research methodology, thereby contributing to the broadening of qualitative inquiry.
