라캉의 자아와 상상계

Lacan’s Ego and the Imaginary

프로이트는 자아가 자기 집의 주인이 아니라는 발언과 함께 정신분석 특유의 탈중심성을 강조했다. 주지하듯이 라캉은 프로이트로의 복귀를 천명하면서 자아와의 관계에서 정신분석이 갖는 탈중심성을 더욱 밀고 나갔다. 그 결과 우리는 자아와 주체 간의 구분이라는 중대한 개념적 이정표를 얻었다. 그러나 자아와 주체 간의 구분에만 집중하다 보면 임상 실제의 미묘함을 놓치는 경직된 이분법이 초래되는 한편, 국내 학계에서는 라캉의 자아에 대한 논의가 부재한 상황이다. 하물며 논의가 이루어질 때에도 거울 단계나 광학 모델에 집중되고 있다. 이 논문은 이러한 학문적 공백에 관여함으로써 라캉의 자아에 대한 입체적인 조망을 제시하고자 한다. 필자의 논의는 크게 두 부분으로 나뉘어 진행된다. 첫 번째 부분에서 필자는 라캉이 1930년대 후반에서 1950년대 중반까지 쓴 일련의 텍스트로부터 자아에 관한 이론적 쟁점을 추출하고, ‘분석에 관한 도식’을 중심으로 자아에 대한 라캉의 임상 방식을 논의할 것이다. 두 번째 부분에서 필자는 1970년대 라캉이 제안한 ‘새로운 상상계’를 소개하고, 이로 인해 수반되는 임상적 방향성에 대해 논의할 것이다. 이를 통해 라캉의 지적 여정에서 자아 및 상상계가 겪는 역사적 변천을 거시적으로 조망하는 한편, 자아 및 상상계에 관해 그 이론적 측면과 임상적 측면을 균형적으로 아우르는 관점을 제공하고자 한다.

Freud emphasized the decentering operation of psychoanalysis, stating that the ego is not the owner of his house. With his emphasis on the return to Freud, Lacan pushed psychoanalytic decentering with regard to the ego even further. Thus, we have inherited the crucial conceptual distinction between the ego and the subject. However, the overemphasis on the distinction between the ego and the subject leads us to lose sight of the nuanced picture of clinical practice. Moreover, discussions of the Lacanian ego are seldom found in existing scholarship. This article intervenes in this academic lacuna by providing a stereographic examination of the Lacanian ego. In the first part of the article, the authoer extracts the theoretical problematic of the ego from the early Lacan and discusses the Lacanian clinical model in terms of his schema of analysis. In the second part, the author examines the theoretical breakthrough of the new imaginary in the 1970s in concert with its corresponding clinical orientation. In sum, this article examines the historical changes that the Lacanian ego and the imaginary have undergone while providing a detailed investigation of their theoretical and clinical aspects.
