On Your Genius: Spiritual Intelligence and Ecological Cybernetics in Henry David Thoreau’s Walden

본 연구는 헨리 데이비드 소로우의 『월든』에서 구현된 천재성(genius) 개념을 영성지능과 생태학적 사이버네틱스의 이론적 틀 속에서 재해석함으로써, 생성형 인공지능 시대에 인간 주체의 자기-다움 형성과 내면의 무한성을 회복할 수 있는 새로운 삶의 양태를 모색하고자 한다. 소로우가 말하는 천재성은 비교 우위에 기반한 경쟁적 탁월성이 아니라, 각 개별 존재가 자기 고유의 내적 리듬을 따라 자기-타자-세계와 깊은 감각적·정서적 공명을 이루며 생태적 관계망을 구축하는 존재론적 역량이다. 본 논문은 그레고리 베이트슨의 생태학적 심미성 이론과 애덤 스미스의 공정한 관찰자(the impartial spectator) 개념을 접목하여, 소로우의 천재성이 각 존재의 특이성을 긍정하면서 그들의 상호 잠재성을 역동적으로 실현하도록 이끄는 심미적 생태 모델의 토대임을 논증한다. 이러한 『월든』의 생태학적 사이버네틱스는 내면의 우주학(home-cosmography), 지금-여기(here-and-now), 그리고 영혼의 경제학(economics of the soul)과 같은 개념을 통해 구체화된다. 이를 기반으로 본 논문은 소로우의 천재성이 현대 테크노-자본주의가 야기하는 비교·경쟁적 사고의 획일화와 정서적 파편화를 해독하는 기제이자, 더 나아가 정신적 치유와 성장을 가능케 하는 숲으로서 기능하는 『월든』의 생태학적 사이버네틱스의 핵심 원동력임을 밝히고자 한다.

This study reinterprets the concept of genius embodied in Henry David Thoreau’s Walden through the theoretical frameworks of spiritual intelligence and ecological cybernetics, aiming to explore new modes of life that foster becoming oneself and the recovery of inner infinity in the era of generative artificial intelligence. Thoreau’s notion of genius is not the conventional idea of competitive excellence based on comparative advantage, but an ontological capacity for each individual to achieve to become oneself and to construct a vital ecological network through deep sensory and emotional resonance with the self, others, and the world, guided by one’s unique inner rhythm. By integrating Gregory Bateson’s ecological aesthetics with Adam Smith’s concept of the impartial spectator, this paper argues that Thoreau’s genius provides the foundation for an aesthetic model of ecological resonance that celebrates the singularity of each being and dynamically actualizes their mutual potentialities. The ecological cybernetics of Walden is embodied through concepts such as “home-cosmography,” an inquiry into the infinitude of the inner self; the “here-and-now,” which embodies divine temporality; and “economics of the soul,” founded on the logic of the incalculable. On this basis, this paper argues that Thoreau’s notion of genius functions as an antidote to the standardization of comparative-competitive thinking and to the affective fragmentation induced by modern techno-capitalism; further, it demonstrates that this notion constitutes a core mechanism of Walden’s cybernetics, conceived as a forest that enables psychological and spiritual healing and growth.
