OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the professional experiences of personal trainers through narrative inquiry, focusing on how they contribute to clients’ health and well-being through individualized programs and how they adapt to the evolving demands of the fitness industry in response to population aging and the growing emphasis on health-centered fitness. METHODS A qualitative narrative inquiry was conducted with seven personal trainers, each with over five years of experience, all working at separate personal training studios across Seoul, ensuring that no two participants were employed at the same location Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically to identify key patterns and meanings within their coaching narratives. RESULTS The findings revealed that personal trainers play a crucial role in enhancing clients’ quality of life by delivering tailored and evidence-based exercise programs. There is a rising demand for functional training and innovative coaching approaches, driven by demographic shifts and changes in consumer expectations. However, persistent challenges such as low entry barriers and the lack of standardized professional qualifications were also noted. CONCLUSIONS Personal trainers support sustainable client engagement and improved health outcomes through personalized and scientifically grounded practices. To meet the changing needs of the fitness market— particularly among older adults—there is an urgent need to strengthen professional education and establish structured support systems to reinforce the expertise and credibility of the profession
