가야금산조 농현에 관한 연구 - 성금연류 짧은 산조의 진양조를 중심으로 -

A Study on Nonghyeon in Gayageum Sanjo - Focusing on the Jinyangjo of Seong Geumyeon’s Short Sanjo -

본 연구는 기존의 추상적 언어로만 설명되어 온 악조별 농현의 차이를 음향적 특성이라는 측면에서 정량적으로 분석하여 구체화하는 시도의 일환이다. 이를 위한 분석 대상으로 성금연류 짧은 산조의 진양조를 택하고, 구성상 각 조의 특징적인 농현이 이루어지는 부분에 대해 구조 기반 지표(Frequency range, Harmonics)와 스펙트럼시간 기반 지표(Spectral centroid, Spectral flux)를 활용하여 분석하는 방식으로 진행하였다. 연구 결과 우조의 농현 즉, 중후한 농현으로 표현되었던 부분은 비교적 안정적인 주파수 범위와 낮은 분포의 Harmonics 구조를 형성하였으며 계면조와 평조의 중간적 수치를 보였다. 평조의 경쾌하고 가벼운 농현은 1차로 이루어진 단순한 Harmonics 구조와 Flux의 완만한 분포도로 확인되었다. 반면 계면조에서의 격렬하고 애절한 농현은 넓은 주파수 범위와 복합적인 Harmonics 구조, 그리고 높은 Flux 변동성이 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 각 농현의 음색적 특성을 설명하는 지표로서 전통 음악적 표현을 보다 객관적으로 규명하는 데에 활용될 수 있다. 특히 기존에 폭과 횟수를 중심으로 설명되던 단순한 피치 변동을 넘어 음색과 에너지 분포를 포함한 다각적 표현으로 농현을 해석할 수 있는 분석적 토대를 제시한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

This study seeks to substantiate and clarify the differences in nonghyeon (a lefthand vibrato technique) across akjo (modal systems in Korean traditional music), which have hitherto been described only in abstract terms, by quantitatively analyzing their acoustic characteristics. For this purpose, the jinyangjo (the slowest rhythmic cycle in sanjo) section of Seong Geumyeon (1923–1986)’s short sanjo (improvised solo pieces for the gayageum) was selected as the analytical subject. The analysis focused on the passages where the characteristic nonghyeon of each akjo appears, employing structure-based measures (frequency range, harmonics) as well as spectrum-time measures (spectral centroid, spectral flux). As a result, the nonghyeon of ujo (one of the akjo in sanjo)-previously described as producing a heavy and dignified tone-was found to exhibit a relatively stable frequency range and a harmonic structure with lower distribution, yielding values that lay between those of gyemyeonjo (one of the akjo in sanjo) and pyeongjo (one of the akjo in sanjo). The light and lively nonghyeon of pyeongjo was characterized by a simple harmonic structure consisting primarily of the first harmonic, along with a gentle distribution of flux. By contrast, the intense and plaintive nonghyeon of gyemyeonjo was marked by a wide frequency range, a complex harmonic structure, and high variability in flux. These results can serve as indicators for explaining the timbral characteristics of each nonghyeon, thereby contributing to a more objective elucidation of traditional musical expressions. In particular, this study is significant in that it presents an analytical foundation for interpreting nonghyeon not merely as simple pitch fluctuations-previously described in terms of width and frequency of occurrence-but as a multidimensional expression encompassing timbre and energy distribution.
